Texas Story
Le groupe Texas va clôturer le Festival interceltique de Lorient le 14 août
The Texas story begins in Glasgow (Scotland), in 1986 when bassist Johny McElhone went looking for a new musical challenge and was introduced to 18 years-old art student. Sharleen Spiteri gave her own performance of the Culture Club Hit "Do you really want to hurt me" and McElhone loved her voice and they set about forming a band. Joining them were guitarist Ally McErlaine and drummer Stuart Kerr.
They found their name in the title of the Win Wenders film "Paris, Texas", a movie they loved for the sound track made by Cooder. They began writing songs and got a record deal with Mercury. Sharleen Spiteri and Ally McErlaine quickly became the focal point, partly due to Ally's fluent guitar playing; it was the slide-guitar-style that distinguished February 1989's UK number 8 single "I don't want a lover ", the very first song main songwriters Sharleen Spiteri and Johny McElhone had written together.
L'histoire du groupe Texas commence à Glasgow (Ecosse) quand, en 1986, le bassiste Johny McElhone, à la recherche d'un nouveau défi musical, rencontra l'étudiante en art Sharleen Spiteri, âgée de 18 ans, qui réussissait sa propre performance (Culture Club Hit "Voulez-vous vraiment me blesser"), Mc Elhone aima sa voix et ils se sont réunis pour former un groupe. Le guitariste Ally McErlaine et le batteur Stuart Kerr se joignèrent à eux.
Ils créèrent leur nom en s'inspirant du titre du film de Win Wenders "Paris, Texas", un film qu'ils aimaient notamment pour sa bande sonore réalisée par Cooder. Ils commencèrent à écrire des chansons et à obtenir un bon contrat d'enregistrement avec Mercury. Sharleen Spiteri et Ally McErlaine devinrent rapidement le point focal du groupe, cela dû en partie notamment au style de jeu de guitare et au talent d'Ally: ce fut ce style qui les porta au sommet des hits aux Etats-Unis avec leur single n°8 "I don't want a lover" (cf. video), l'une des premières chansons écrites ensemble par Sharleen Spiteri et Johny Mc Elhone.

I like very much the performance of the guitarist in this song and everybody in the world remembers the refrain of Sharleen :
"I don't want a lover
I just need a friend..."
But, probably one of the most popular Texas songs, written by Sharleen and Johny McElhone as an homage to Marvin Gaye's "Sexual healing" was the sing "Say what you want" : it became Texas'biggest hit in the UK :
"Well, you say what you want
But it won't change my mind
I'll feel the same about you
And you can tell me your reasons
But it won't change my feelings
I'll feel the same about you..."
J'aime beaucoup la performance du guitariste dans cette chanson et tout le monde se souvient du refrain de Sharleen :
"Je ne veux pas d'un amoureux
J'ai seulement besoin d'un ami..."
Mais, probablement l'une des plus populaires chansons de Texas, écrite par Sharleen et Johny McElhone en hommage à la chanson de Marvin Gaye "Sexual healing" fut la chanson "Dis ce que tu veux" : elle devint le plus grand succès aux USA :

My favorite song is "Guitar song", written by Johny McElhone, Sharleen Spiteri with the intro from the Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin hit from 1969 "Je t'aime, moi non plus..." - On the French TV show "La nuit de Serge Gainsbourg" ("The night of Serge Gainsbourg"), in March 2001, Texas performed "Guitar song" :

Ma chanson préférée est "Guitar song" écrite par Johny McElhone, Sharleen Spiteri avec l'intro du succès de Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin* (1969) "Je t'aime, moi non plus ..." - Au show télévisuel "La nuit de Serge Gainsbourg" en mars 2001, Texas a interprété "Guitar song" avec succès :

Gageons que ce sera le même succès pour Texas au cours de ce grand Festival interceltique de Lorient !
